When DI Shona Oliver sets out one summer morning to support her local RNLI fundraising triathlon, little does she know that she’s about to investigate the death of one of her own.

 

PC Hayley Campbell is a promising officer and athlete but her postmortem reveals self-administered performance drugs, and a puncture wound in her wetsuit hints at something darker.

 

Shona faces pressure on all sides. Her husband is in prison and her daughter, Becca is flying the nest. Her burgeoning long-distance relationship with old flame, actor James McGowan, is under strain. Shona’s boss wants her to wrap up the investigation, fearing a media disaster for Police Scotland, and with her grieving team overwhelmed by a second drug-related death at a festival, her leadership is being questioned even by those closest to her.

 

What part to Hayley’s estranged and shady family play in all this, and is Shona in the frame for a crime herself? Multiple people had a reason to want Hayley dead. Can Shona keep her head above water long enough to work out which one, and prevent a final, devastating, tragedy?
